When the owners of this home in the mountains decided to update their kitchen, one of their main goals was to incorporate the beautiful view of their backyard. Additionally, they wanted to update their cabinets and fixtures and expand their spatially limited kitchen. Although horizontal expansion was prohibited by limited square footage, we achieved a great vertical expansion by opening the ceiling to the second floor and creating the illusion of a much larger space. We replaced a single door at the rear of the kitchen with sliding glass doors leading onto the deck, thereby uniting the interior space with the outdoors. We reflected the homeowners’ artistic flair with a glass tile backsplash in earth tones to bring out the color of the cherry cabinetry, soapstone countertops and slate floor.
